surface research and destroy
my "surface research and destroy" concept has taken a new direction because of time confinement. while my previous concept deals with an issue i am genuinely interested in, i felt i would be struggling to fulfill the assignment instead of focusing on the project. i fully intend to pursue this concept outside of class, but basically, if im going to slaughter a chicken, its gonna be worth it.
so...new idea.
i have spent my previous experience as an "artist" doing technically proficient paintings and drawings, still lifes, portraits, bucolic photographs, boring stuff. i built my portfolio out of things i was largely uninspired and unexcited about, mostly because i knew i was good at it and was afraid to put anything of myself into it for fear of criticism. this is not the artist i want to be. SO i am going to burn the portfolio that i used when i applied to vcu because i no longer identify with that work. i am planning to make a video of me burning this portfolio and project it on the wall, and below have the ashes that remain. so far i have collected the pieces i intend to burn, several oils, photographs and drawings, and found a good wall in an area i can control wind as well as burn without fear of the fire getting out of control and painted it white.
